In this post we show you how to hack a JBL Flip 5 speaker into a speaker light for our nomadic raves. We used these speakers for the possibility to synchronise up to 100 speakers. Through a tilt sensor in the lights, the speaker lights flicker on and off in the dancing crowd, creating flickering emergent patterns in a dancing crowd.
Components needed for the Speaker Light:
- switch
- resistors
- Led Lights 3-5 V
- SW-520D Helling Tiltsensor
- 470uF 16V Elektrolytic Capacitor
- PCB Board (printed at Eurocircuits)
- 3D Cap and socket for Print. Design by Hermano Luz to be downloaded here.
- Please follow the step -by-step guide in the pictures below.
- Attach the assembled speaker light to the + and – of the JBL flip 5 speaker. Please follow the instruction video in this post for to open the speaker.
- Important: in some cases the sound quality can be affected when the wire resonates with the speaker membrane.
- To disperse and diffuse the light, we have sprayed the caps lightly with a neon spray.
